Vattenfall has secured 100MW (400MWh) of storage capacity from the Leopard battery under development by Giga Storage in the Netherlands.
The Swedish company’s head of wholesale customers Erik Suichies said the contract gives Vattenfall full operational control to mitigate increased imbalance risks across its customer and renewable portfolio.
According to the company, the battery will support short-term wholesale market operations by responding to surpluses and shortages.
“As renewables take an increasingly prominent role in our energy system, the need for flexible capacity continues to grow,” Suichies said.
“Batteries can respond rapidly to constant fluctuationsstepping in during shortages or storing energy when supply exceeds demand,” Suichies added.
“This makes them a critical component of the energy system of the future.”
Giga Storage has reached final investment decision for the scheme, which will have a maximum output of 300MW and be built in Delfzijl.
Vattenfall will be able to store up to 400 megawatt-hours in the battery and charge or discharge at up to 100MW.
The contract will commence on 1 January 2028.
This is the company’s third flexibility contract in a short period, following 50MW in the Netherlands and 55MW in Germany earlier this year.
